The Art of the Grip

I meet a lot of people. Hundreds in a year. And as a result of this, I shake a lot of hands.


A handshake is so many things in business. It's a physical embodiment of connection, trust, and respect It's literally first contact. A first impression. A connection with intention. It's a beginning. It's a middle. And sometimes, it's an end. So much going on in such a simple gesture.


A handshake to an experienced businessman, is also a gauge.


You can learn so much about a person in their first handshake with you. Their attitude. Their experience. Their confidence. Their health. Their working background. And, for some of us, it can show membership of a brotherhood of like-minded individuals.


There's an art to this. What Not To Do


When inexperienced business people shake hands, they usually let go too quickly. There's a nervousness and lack of confidence in this. Have you ever been caught in a long handshake that you couldn't break away from? Lots of people find that uncomfortable as the touch goes on for ages and the inexperienced businessman doesn't know how to let go. The short answer is 'Don't' - the other person eventually will. And if they don't, a left hand on the upper arm and a gentle guide to walk or sit down will work perfectly well. I've learned so much over the years about the value of a proper handshake. It's an exercise in respect and grounding. A genuine interest in you as a person.

It is accompanied by a series of statements and questions. "It's good to see you." "How have you been?" "Good flight?" You reply to these questions and you will ask some of your own. All while holding hands. Same goes with C-Suite business all over the world. A handshake is private time. No one in a room will do anything to interfere with it.

Want to really be remembered in a boardroom and control the dynamic? Take your left hand and support someone's right elbow when you shake hands. This is especially appreciated in places like Dubai. Balance is also key. Not too gentle. Firm. Not hard. It's not a test of strength. It's a sign of good faith. Despite advancements and so many shifts in business, the handshake remains a timeless ritual that bridges the gap between strangers, and solidifies bonds between acquaintances. It is not to be feared, but valued as a simple yet powerful gesture that speaks volumes. Give it the respect it deserves. Until next time! Six
